Christian Education – Our Mission
The educational mission of the church is to provide opportunities for all to grow in faith and understanding, deepening their individual relationship and belonging as a member of this church and to develop a sense of Christian values in our day to day living and a basic knowledge of our religious heritage.
The program is guided by the Christian Education Committee, a 10 person team that is committed to providing a quality program for all children. They provide support for teachers, children, and parents. A committee member is available to answer questions each Sunday in the Parish House.
We are excited that you are considering your child’s religious education with us.
Child care for infants to toddlers aged 2 years old is provided every Sunday from 9:45 – 11:30 in the Nursery located in the Parish House.
We offer classes for children ages 3 years old through 5th grade. All children attend the church service until approximately 10:30, leaving during the second verse of the second hymn. They are then escorted by the Christian Education Director and Church School Teachers to the Marsh Parish House (building located behind the church) for their classroom lessons.
Classes are broken in to PreK-2nd grades and 3rd – 6th grades. Each class is designed to be age appropriate for writing and reading levels while learning the basic stories from the Old and New Testaments through story time, crafts, games, songs and even acting out the story. Water and a light snack are provided. Church school ends at 11:15am. Your child will be escorted back to Fellowship Hall.
6th grade and older begin their Sunday at 9am at the Rail and River Café located at 21 Bank St. This is a drop-off time chaperoned by our middle school teachers. A generous donation funds the purchases. This is a time of food, fellowship and weekly reflection. At 9:45am the class walks to the church together, escorted by the teachers. They meet in the chapel room of the church building to hear their daily lesson, which is based on the morning’s scripture lesson using various tools and pages from the Internet. At 10:30am they will move to the sanctuary ready to listen to the sermon.
There is one Communion Service on the first Sunday of each month which includes the children – every age is welcome to our table. Communion is served to each person in their pew by a Deacon.
Throughout the church school year the children have opportunities to “perform” for the congregation though songs, skits and during our end-of-the-year Children’s Service held the 2nd Sunday of June.
Bibles (The New Adventure Bible: The NIV Study Bible for Kids) are presented to our 3rd grade students each September and to new students 3rd grade and older as they enter the church school program
Confirmation Class is open to any student 8th- 12th grades. Classes begin in October and run through April. The Confirmation Service is typically held the first Sunday of May. Classes are once a month and scheduled at the convenience of the class and teachers. Lessons include Church History-Local and UCC, Basic Bible, The Liturgy, Worship and Sacraments, Morality, Life of Jesus and the 10 Commandments, The Gospel of Mark (it is a requirement that the Gospel of Mark be read in its entirety), Prayer and Mindfulness. We take several field trips as well to Temple Sholom in New Milford, Baitul Mukarram Masjid in Danbury and The Met-Cloisters in NYC. Regular worship service attendance is required as well as mission work.
Summer Church School and Camp
When the regular Church School program is over on the second Sunday in June, Church School shifts into summer mode with an abbreviated program of All Ages learning through “hands on” lessons and activities. These classes are held in the Taylor Room of the church building and run until 11am.
In late June the church offers a week long Vacation Bible School.
The United Church of Christ Connecticut offers summer camp at Silver Lake Conference Center in Sharon. Programs are open to all youth. For more information visit the Silver Lake web site. We are so very fortunate to have this great camp nearby. Many of our kids attend each summer.
