“Healing and Caring One Stitch at a Time”

Started here at the First Congregational Church in 2009 we have modeled our ministry after the prayer shawl ministry started by Janet Severi Bristow and Victoria Galo , two graduates of the 1997 Women’s Leadership Institute at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. www.shawlministry.com

We meet the second Sunday of the month at 11:30 in the Chapel.  Members knit or crochet shawls on their own time and bring them to our meetings to share or bring ongoing projects to work on.  Our members donate their time, talent and materials to make these beautiful shawls.

Donations of yarn are gratefully accepted, and we have a stash for members to use.   The shawls are given to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy.  Many blessings are prayed into every stitch.

Since our inception we have given over 1000 shawls away to various members, friends, organizations, and even shipped them across miles.  We have donated to the local cancer center, the regional hospice center, the American Heart Association, to our military overseas, and to anyone who asks.

Each year we gift our confirmation class with white shawls, baby blankets for baptisms, pocket prayer shawls for events and members, as well as special projects.  We participate in the New Milford library knit whits community service projects yearly as well.  Donating shawls and lap blankets to the Danbury Women’s shelter and other service organizations.

As a group in the fall we have participated in the “Gathering” of prayer shawl ministries held in Hartford at St. Patrick-St. Anthony’s Church.  Where over 100 shawl groups share ministry tips, knitting projects and swap yarn.  A contemplative day of fellowship.

During the New Milford Village Fair Days in July we sell knitted items in front of the church in support of the churches Baby Bundles mission.

We welcome all to join us, beginners and advanced stitcher
